Tesco Beechwood Ham, Egg and Chips Sandwich Review

Today’s review takes us to Tesco, where I picked up the Beechwood Ham, Egg and Chips Sandwich with Seasoned Fries. I was really looking forward to this one, as it had so much potential to be good. Surely they couldn’t get this wrong.

Well, basically, it is crisps, not chips. I don’t know why they said chips, but there you go.

🛒 Limited Edition Tesco Meal Deal Find

This was a limited edition sandwich at the time, so I’m not sure if Tesco still stocks it now. We are catching up with review posts on the website, so this one is from a few months back.

It was £3 normally, but I got it as part of the Tesco meal deal for £3.85, with a drink as well.

🥔 The Crisp Sandwich Nostalgia

I was interested in this sandwich because of the crisps inside it. Someone I talk to from America mentioned crisp sandwiches, because they had seen one in a video, and I was like, yeah, we do have crisp sandwiches here.

When I was a kid, I used to have Worcester sauce crisps in sandwiches, or cheese Wotsits in a sandwich. So I think that got my excitement up a bit, because I thought this could be a proper crisp sandwich sort of thing.

📦 What’s Inside The Sandwich?

The sandwich itself is made with hard-boiled egg with mayonnaise, smoked beechwood ham, seasoned potato fries, and tomato ketchup.

I used to eat ketchup sandwiches as a kid as well, and people used to say I was weird. People used to say I was weird for having ham and ketchup sandwiches, but clearly I was just ahead of everyone by about 20 years.

The packet describes it as a comforting, timeless combination with beechwood ham, egg mayo, the sweetness and acidity of vinegar fries, and tangy ketchup tucked in with seasoned fries.

So on paper, it sounded good. I was actually excited to try it.

👀 First Impressions

Once I opened it, the sandwich didn’t look that visually pleasing, but that doesn’t always matter. Some food looks terrible and tastes good. Sadly, this wasn’t really one of those moments.

There were quite a lot of crisp bits in it, but the ham looked a bit basic, to be honest. It didn’t look the best quality, but then again, it is a £3 sandwich, so you have to take that into consideration.

🏜️ Too Dry, Not Enough Sauce

The main problem is that this sandwich had potential to be really, really good, but Tesco have failed a bit here.

It is not very saucy, and I think it needed a lot more sauce.

That is where it really lacked. There was barely any sauce, and the whole thing was just very, very dry.

If you like dry sandwiches, you might like this one. But I don’t know why you would want a dry sandwich. That isn’t really what you want when you’re eating a sandwich.

🥔 The Crisps Didn’t Do Enough

I also think they used the wrong crisps. I wanted something with a bit more tang and a bit more crunch. Something that actually gives you that proper crisp sandwich feeling.

The seasoned fries inside were not as good as I hoped. They were very soft and not really crunchy. I thought they would be more like crisps, but they didn’t really have that proper crunch.

And I think that is what I was hoping for. A bit of crunch, a bit of tang, something that makes the sandwich exciting.

Instead, it was just a bit bland.

Actually, it was more than a bit bland. It was very underwhelming.

💡 A Good Idea, Badly Executed

It had all the hallmarks of being a really good sandwich, but it was executed badly. It sounds good on paper, but it just didn’t work properly.

It is not horrible. I wouldn’t say it is the worst sandwich ever made. But it is very boring.

If you like boring sandwiches, then maybe you’ll like this. But for me, there was no real tang, no spice, no proper crunch, and not enough sauce. You don’t really want a boring sandwich.

I’ve had the Tesco vegan breakfast sandwich before, and I would rather have that, to be honest. That was much more tasty than this.

This one just didn’t excite me at all.

I’m giving the Tesco Beechwood Ham, Egg and Chips Sandwich a 3.5 out of 10.

And I was probably being kind giving it that score at the time.

It could have been really good, but it was too dry, too bland, and the crisp bits were not crunchy enough.

I wouldn’t buy it again. It had potential, but it was a letdown.
