Kettle Honey Dijon Mustard Potato Chips Review

Today’s review takes us to Ocado, where I picked up a bag of Kettle Honey Dijon Mustard Potato Chips.

It said they were new, but I don’t really know if they are actually new. I’ve got no idea. They were on offer for £1.65, and I think they normally cost £2.40, so I thought I would try them out.

I do like Kettle crisps anyway, and honey Dijon mustard sounded pretty good. It’s one of them flavours where it could either be really nice, or it could be a bit underwhelming if the mustard flavour isn’t strong enough.

📦 What’s on the Packet

On the packet, there’s a little paragraph from Rachel Khoo. She says there is something magical about the way honey softens Dijon mustard’s punch, like a perfect dance of sweet and tangy. She also says she can’t help snacking on them while cooking, and that they’re great crushed over salads too.

Well, we’re not crushing them over salads, Rachel. We’re not doing that. We’re just eating them out the bag like boring people, Rachel.

Looking at the packet, they do actually have honey in them. Well, honey powder. Not proper honey then, but I don’t really know how crisps work. Maybe that is normal. If you make crisps, let me know. Would you use proper honey? I’ve got no idea.

They also say they are hand cooked in small batches and made with 100% British potatoes, so fair enough. Kettle are normally pretty good when it comes to crisps. You usually know what you’re getting with them.

👃 First Impressions

When I opened the bag, I wouldn’t say there was a strong smell. It mostly just smelt like crisps. I was expecting a bit more from the honey Dijon side, but smell-wise, there wasn’t loads going on.

But would they taste much better than they smelt? Yeah, they did.

⭐ The Review

You definitely get that Dijon mustard kick. They are not lying about the flavour here. Sometimes you try something and the flavour on the packet is barely there, but with these, you really do get the Dijon mustard.

There’s a proper kick on the back of the tongue. It isn’t chilli spice, but it has that mustard burn. If you don’t like Dijon mustard, you won’t get away from it. There is no hiding from it in these crisps.

So if you don’t like mustard, or you don’t like anything with a bit of burn in your mouth, avoid these like the plague. I’m from Colchester, the oldest recorded town, so we’re allowed to bring up the plague.

But I do like that sort of thing. I like a bit of spice. I like the dopamine effect. And these have got that.

The honey does help balance it out a bit. It doesn’t make them too sweet, but it does soften the mustard enough so it’s not just attacking your mouth for no reason.

Another sign of a good product is when you keep wanting to eat more. If I’m sitting there talking loads and not really eating it, there’s a good chance I’m not that into it. But with these, I kept going back for another one.

I said at the time these wouldn’t last very long, and they certainly didn’t. We ate them very quickly, so that says it all really.

I would definitely buy these again. Even at full price, I think I would still get them. They are very tasty, and Kettle is normally a brand I trust. If you pick up a bag of Kettle crisps, most of the time you know you’re getting something decent.

I also think with some crisps, people add dips or sauces to get that extra bit of flavour or kick. You don’t really need to do that with these. They already have enough going on.

I used to be really limited with flavours when I was younger. I remember going to France as a kid and getting a hot dog with loads of mustard on it, and I couldn’t stand it. But now my taste has changed, and I do like a bit of mustard in my life.

I’m giving the Kettle Honey Dijon Mustard Potato Chips an 8.5 out of 10.

They’ve got proper flavour, a nice mustard kick, and they actually taste like what they say on the packet.
