Diddly Squat Farm Mushroom & Wild Garlic Crisps Review

Today’s review takes us to Ocado, where I picked up the Diddly Squat Farm Mushroom & Wild Garlic Crisps.

These were new in Ocado, and I don’t know if they are anywhere else yet. They might be an Ocado exclusive at the moment, but I have a feeling they will probably end up everywhere eventually.

The main thing straight away is the price.

These cost £4 a bag.

Yes, £4 for crisps, so they better be good.

🍄 Mushroom And Wild Garlic

I do think I may have picked the worst flavour for some people, but I wanted something a bit different.

The other flavours sounded like things we have tried before, and I can’t keep buying mustard crisps all the time, so I went for the mushroom and wild garlic flavour.

I thought there would be more of a description on the bag, but there really wasn’t loads to say. The packet says they are potato crisps with woodland mushroom and wild garlic flavour seasoning.

It also says they taste like a walk in the woods.

Does a walk in the woods taste good to you? I don’t know. I think they might be trying a bit too hard with that one.

🚜 The Diddly Spuds Story

The packet also talks about the story of Diddly Spuds.

In 2019, they planted two acres of potatoes and ended up with a terrifying 40 tons of spuds, so they had to open the farm just to shift them.

Then in year two, they apparently managed to grow the wrong kind of potato for crisps, before finally finding the perfect crisp-making spud.

So there you go. It has been emotional.

They are also made in the United Kingdom, in collaboration with Two Farmers, so I presume they are the ones making the crisps.

💸 £4 For A Bag Of Crisps

Before even tasting them, I did think they were probably going to be expensive for what they are.

At £4, they have to prove themselves.

You can get plenty of crisps for less than that, so these needed to taste like something a bit special. Otherwise, it is just expensive branding and a bag of potatoes.

👃 First Smell

When I opened the bag, they did have that woody mushroom smell.

You can tell straight away this is not going to be a normal crisp flavour. If you don’t like mushrooms, don’t even go here.

This is not one of those crisps where the mushroom is barely there. The mushroom is there, and the garlic is definitely there as well.

🧄 The Garlic Is Strong

Taste-wise, they do exactly what they say.

You get the mushroom flavour, and you can definitely taste the wild garlic.

If you don’t like garlic, you are going to struggle. You are really going to struggle here, because the garlic is quite potent.

For me, that is a good thing. I do like garlic a lot. I like Greek food and Mediterranean-style food, so this sort of flavour works for me.

If you like garlic and that more earthy, savoury crisp flavour, I think you will probably like these.

🍄 The Mushroom Comes Through Too

The garlic is probably the stronger flavour, but you do still get the mushroom coming through every now and then.

That is what makes them work. They are not just garlic crisps pretending to be something else. They do actually have that mushroom and wild garlic flavour.

They taste really quite nice.

And I think if you don’t like them, it is probably not because they have done the flavour badly. It is more likely because you just don’t like mushroom and garlic crisps.

🧀 Perfect With A Ploughman’s Lunch

The golden rule with crisps is that if you keep going back for another one, that is normally a good sign.

I can see me getting through these very quickly. I kept grabbing another one, then another one, then another one, which is normally the sign of a good crisp.

That tells me I like them.

I reckon they would be perfect with a cheese sandwich, maybe with a bit of Branston Pickle, or as part of a ploughman’s lunch.

That is what they should have put on the packet really.

Perfect with a ploughman’s lunch.

Because I think they would be.

I’m giving the Diddly Squat Farm Mushroom & Wild Garlic Crisps a 9 out of 10.

I really liked them.

They are expensive at £4, but the flavour is strong, the garlic is there, the mushroom comes through, and they actually taste like what they say on the packet.

If you like garlic, mushrooms, and proper savoury crisps, I think you will probably enjoy these.

I would definitely try more from the range, and I think the sausage and mustard flavour might have to be next.
