The Commons Café Colchester – Mung Bean Curry and Vegan Cake

📅 May 21, 2026 | ✍️ Sneaky305Club

I went to The Commons Café in Colchester on a Thursday in early July, which is pretty normal for me when I go into the city. Still feels strange saying that, as Colchester is newly a city.

I’d wanted to come here in the summer and sit outside, because the garden area at The Minories / Commons Café is really nice and relaxing.

For vegan food in Colchester, like I said in the reel, this is one of the few bright sparks. They’re open every week from 10am to 4pm, Thursday to Sunday.

All the food is vegan and mostly organic, and if you asked me where to visit in Colchester for proper wholefood-style vegan food, this would probably be the place I’d mention.

All the cakes were vegan when I visited too, so if you’ve got a sweet tooth, there’s plenty to choose from. Dangerous information really.

This time, I went for the mung bean curry with poppadoms and rice, which cost £7.50. I think it was by A Good Food Karma, who now does food there every Thursday.

It was really tasty and served in a big bowl, so there was plenty to eat.

For a drink, I had an iced oat milk latte with a shot of caramel. The coffee is always good quality here, so if you like your coffee, it’s definitely worth checking out for that as well.

Then I went back in and had a look at all the cakes. The blackberry and gin cake stood out straight away, so I went for that.

It was delicious, especially while sitting outside in the sun in such a peaceful setting.

This was a particularly good foodie day, and I even joined up as a member on this visit, which cost £10.

As it’s a place I like going to, I’m sure The Commons Café will end up being featured again.
