Deliciously Ella Almond Butter Protein Granola Review
Today’s review takes us to Waitrose, where I picked up the Deliciously Ella Almond Butter Protein Granola with Crunchy Nuts and Mixed Seeds.
Apparently, this is a new cereal. I don’t know if it is definitely new, or if it is just new at Waitrose, but I saw it in the new section and it grabbed me.
It was £4.20, which is quite expensive for cereal. Normally, I just go for whatever is on offer. I don’t really have a set cereal I always buy. I usually just look at the price and think, that’ll do.
So this was a bit of a wild purchase from me, because it is probably nearly double or even triple what I normally pay for cereal. Normally I go for own-brand, so this had better be good.
I won’t definitely say it will be good though, because I have tasted expensive cereal before and sometimes it tastes like sawdust. So hopefully this doesn’t taste like sawdust.
🥜 Almonds, Oats And A Disclaimer Alert
The description says it is a blend of baked gluten-free oats, almonds, and almond butter. It is 100% natural, plant-based, a source of natural protein, high in fibre, gluten-free, dairy-free, and has no artificial ingredients, preservatives, or flavourings.
It also says it is vegan friendly, with no added sugar, golden roasted, and deliciously nutty.
We will see if it is deliciously nutty.
Disclaimer alert: this has almonds in it, so if you have a nut allergy, don’t eat it. Don’t bother. I’m not being held liable over granola.
The packet says the almond butter protein granola combines creamy almond butter, whole almonds, wholegrain oats, and seeds for a rich, satisfying crunch. It also says it is naturally high in plant-based protein and fibre, and is a nourishing way to start your day.
I have actually tried one of their cereals before. I think it was the Apple and Cinnamon Granola, and I did like that, so I was hoping this one would be good as well.
When I opened it, it did look like granola. Or sawdust granola, if we are being honest.
⚖️ The 45g Portion Reality Check
I normally weigh my cereal now because I realised I used to eat about four times the amount I should have been eating. I like cereal that much that I was basically eating enough for a small family and then wondering why I had stomach aches.
So if you are getting stomach aches after breakfast, check how much cereal you are actually having. You might be eating far too much of it.
The serving size on this is 45g, which does not look like much when it is in the bowl. It is one of those annoying moments where you realise the recommended amount of cereal is not the mountain you normally pour in.
For milk, I used oat milk because that was what I had, and again, it was on offer. That is basically how I shop most of the time. The £4.20 cereal was the wild bit here.
😮 Not Sawdust, Thankfully
Taste-wise, I was relieved.
It was actually alright. More than alright really. I could deal with this.
Thank God, because I had to eat it for the rest of the week, and I would have been annoyed if it was awful.
It is definitely nutty. You do get the almond bits in there, and the almond butter side does come through a little bit. It has a bit of that buttery effect, but it is not too full-on.
It says it has 6.8g of protein per 45g bowl. I don’t know if that is a lot or not. Any protein people can tell me. To me, that seems like a fair amount, but I am not pretending to be a protein expert.
The main thing is that it tastes nice.
🥜 Nice Almond Flavour And A Good Crunch
It does have that nice almond flavour, and the crunch is good. It is not one of those health cereals where it tastes like punishment. You know the ones. You eat them and then wonder why you’ve just spent £6 on cereal.
This one is actually enjoyable.
🧾 The Price Is The Problem
The only real issue is the price.
At £4.20, it is expensive for cereal. It tastes really nice, and they are apparently using good ingredients, but it is still a lot for a box of granola.
I know someone will probably say the ingredients are not that good, because there is always one person. But from what I can see, it looks like a decent cereal.
It is also gluten-free, but if you have coeliac disease or you are sensitive to oats, obviously check it properly first. Some people who are gluten-free can still be sensitive to oats, so don’t just assume it will be fine.
I actually finished the bowl and really enjoyed it. I was dreading it a bit because I thought I might have overpaid for something I didn’t like, but luckily that was not the case.
It is only really a waste of money if you don’t like it. If you do like it, and you can treat yourself now and again, then fair enough.
Would I pay £4.20 again? Probably not. I would probably buy it on offer, because I am a cheapskate and it does not really fit my cheapskate ways buying cereal at that price.
But it is very nice.
If you like nutty almond cereals, this would probably go down well. It has a good flavour, a nice crunch, and it feels like a bit more of a treat cereal.
💪 Do We Really Need Protein Everything?
I don’t really know if everyone needs the protein side of it though. Protein seems to be the new thing now. Everything has protein in it. It is like the new low-fat thing from years ago. First it was low fat, now it is protein. I think most people probably get enough protein anyway, unless you are trying to do something like bodybuilding. So for most people, I think you would probably be safe without needing everything to be a protein version.
⭐ Score
I’m giving the Deliciously Ella Almond Butter Protein Granola an 8.1 out of 10.
Taste-wise, it is a very good cereal. It has a nice almond flavour, a good crunch, and it does not taste like sawdust, which is always helpful.
It probably would have scored higher, maybe even closer to a 9, but the price pulls it down a bit.
At £4.20, it is quite expensive, but if you see it on offer and you like almond granola, I think it is definitely worth trying.
Stay Sneaky, everyone.
